Thinking about going to see Disney’s Cruella at the cinemas? Here are seven wickedly fun-facts about Disney’s Cruella to whet your appetite. Don’t worry, there won’t be any spoilers here.
7 things you (probably) didn’t know about Cruella!

1. Time for the babysitter!
Cruella (2021) is the first film in the 101 Dalmatians series to receive a PG-13 rating in the United States, with a warning of ‘some violence and thematic elements’. Be careful of bringing the little ones to see this Disney film, as the spin-off is all about celebrating cruel Cruella. Despite this mature rating, Cruella is also the first film in the series to depict the villain without her famous cigarette holder: a decision made by Disney to avoid encouraging children to smoke.
2. Delightfully bad!
This is the second live-action Disney film to be focused on a classic villain, after 2014’s Maleficent which followed the origins of the big bad in Sleeping Beauty. Who do you think will be next? Perhaps the story of the nefarious Jafar from Aladdin? Or maybe we will find out the true history of the Queen of Hearts? Personally, I hope for a dive into my favourite Disney villain: And we find out what made Scar so evil in The Lion King…
3. Fashion frenzy!
Any fans of the classic rags-to-riches movie The Devil Wears Prada, may notice some similarities with Cruella and the cold Miranda Priestly. It turns out this wasn’t accidental! This is because they actually share the same screenwriter (sort-of). Aline Brosh McKenna, who wrote The Devil Wears Prada, has a story credit on Cruella and was responsible for an early draft.

4. Fan service!
Attention, fans of 101 Dalmatians! Keep an eye out for the references to the original film, which are hidden throughout Cruella. We won’t spoil them all (and there are still more to be uncovered) but so far we’ve spotted that sound you will hear of the truck horn is the same as the 1961 film, and the blots on Cruella’s school record have a pattern resembling the dalmatians.
5. Forget the English!
Even though Cruella is a famously English character, she is yet to be played by an English actor. Emma Stone will be joining the line of American actors, with the only notable exceptions being Irish actor Victoria Smurfit for Once Upon a Time, and Scottish actor Michelle Gomez for 101 Dalmatian Street.

6. Back on track!
The film premiere for Cruella was the first star-studded red carpet premiere since the COVID-19 pandemic. Hopefully it’s the first of many, with cinemas back to releasing blockbuster movies this coming year.
7. And finally…
Make sure to stay for the credits to see a hidden scene that we won’t spoil here. We’ll just say that it hints at the possible fate for the dalmatians, but you’ll have to stick around to find out more…
